Job Description

Are you passionate about the outdoors?  Are you a keen tramper? Do you have some practical building experience?  If so, this may be your dream job!

The Department has more than 72,000 recreation, historic and biodiversity assets – everything from huts and campgrounds to tracks and bridges to aviaries and wharfs.  This varied asset basis requires skilled professionals to ensure their management is delivering the most for conservation.

The Department employs Inspectors to go out into the field and verify that DOC's tracks, huts, and structures are to standard.  The balance of the role is spent managing minor capital projects and assisting district offices with their field work.

Qualified applicants will have a high degree of competence, fitness and self-awareness for managing themselves as they often work in the backcountry alone.  You will have some practical building experience both as a basis for assessing assets and for assisting with local operations.  You must be able to work with phone and computer applications to input data on assets.  A successful applicant will need to be an organised, self-starter with a passion for conservation.

The role is to be based out of the region's District office either in Rangiora or Sockburn, Christchurch.  The role requires frequent travel around North Canterbury and occasionally throughout the country.  Applicants should anticipate spending four to eight nights a month away from home.

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.

Please apply online.  Applications must include a cover letter, CV and evidence of the required capabilities as per the role description.

For more information, please contact Maurice Roers, mroers@doc.govt.nz or 027-545-1708 quoting vacancy 400/9428.

Applications close at 5pm on Monday, 30 April 2018.
