Job Description

  • Do you want to help build thriving communities who live and work in dynamic cities with affordable housing?
  • Do you want to be well rewarded for your hard work and actively make a real difference to Kiwi lives?

Your work will make an immediate impact on government priorities and the development of NZ's cities and housing. You'll work in a high performing policy shop with a supportive and sociable culture. We'll support your career aspirations and invest in your development.

What we do

The Urban Development team is part of MBIE's Housing and Urban Branch and is responsible for policy advice on housing and urban development issues in our fastest growing cities. We have a focus on the development sector. Our two current major projects are:

  • Developing urban development authority legislation to allow the government to undertake large-scale and complex development projects at pace in urban areas.
  • The National Policy Statement on Urban Development Capacity: working with the Ministry for the Environment to support Councils as they work to provide enough space in their cities for their growing population to live and work.

Your work would also focus on advice about the residential and commercial development sector to shape the government's housing and urban development strategic agenda.

How we work

We love working on gnarly policy issues and have a supportive team culture. We work collaboratively to solve problems together and value diverse perspectives. We make sure people have a chance to lead work on issues they're passionate about. We look out for each other and bring a sense of fun to the work.

Who are we looking for?

We need an experienced policy practitioner with leadership skills. You might be looking for a step-up in your career or a subject matter change. You may have property, law, economics, planning, legislative or general policy experience. You'll need a proven track record of leadership and coaching, problem solving skills, stakeholder engagement and communication skills to develop clearly articulated policy advice in sometimes ambiguous situations.

You might be interested in the Urban Development team if you:

  • Want to be at the forefront of policy making that shapes our cities and housing
  • Are a strategic thinker who sees the big picture and can connect complex systems
  • Have a strong policy background and are able to challenge the status quo in ambiguous situations
  • Can build and maintain strong relationships at a senior level to influence others
  • Are a great communicator,  both verbally and in writing
  • Relish delivering results and contributing to a great team environment
  • Enjoy leading and mentoring other advisors
  • Have a relevant tertiary qualification, in a discipline relevant to policy, social science, economics, planning or property development.
