Job Description

Residential Worker (Casual)

Te Puna Wai Residence - Christchurch

Residential Workers at our residence are here to help young people make positive change at what is often a critical point in their lives.  It is not an ‘easy' job by any stretch but we do get to see results first hand - and that reward is pretty hard to beat.

Because our roles are the result of some pretty innovative legislation, we operate residential services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week providing programmes for children and young people aged from 13 to 17 years to get back on track to living just like other people their age.

We need to ensure that our residence is fully staffed at all times and therefore need to draw from our casual pool.

We are currently looking for casuals to cover the following shifts:
Day Casuals - covering shifts from 6:30am - 3:00pm / 1:30pm - 10:00pm
Night Casuals - covering shift from 10:00pm - 6:30am

What happens in a typical youth worker day (or night)?

The saying ‘Every day is different' was made for this role.  Casual workers are the people who cover the full time team on an ‘as and when' required basis with Residence.  At any time, on any day or any night the phone might ring – because the wellbeing and safety of our young people is not 9 to 5.

The skills and experience you need to be a casual youth worker are:

Most importantly it is about attitude and a passion for working with youth.  There are a number of support skills required like motivation and interpersonal skills with a good dose of resilience and flexibility (our residential services operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week).

Gaining experience in the residential environment at Oranga Tamariki in the role of a Casual Worker, can lead to a permanent career in Residential Services.
