Job Description

Manager, Ministerial Services  

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) occupies a unique position at the centre of New Zealand's system of democratic government. It exists to support the effective conduct of executive government by the Prime Minister, the Governor-General and members of the Cabinet. DPMC's principal role is provision of advice, on a daily basis, to the Prime Minister and Cabinet on the wide range of complex issues that confront the Government - particularly its policy priorities.

The Department also includes the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management, the Greater Christchurch Group and the Child Poverty Unit. 

One of the current groups within DPMC is the Office of the Chief Executive (OCE). The OCE provides leadership, coordination and guidance across DPMC on a range of matters including strategy, governance, legal issues, risk management, ministerial support and communications.

Expressions of interest are now open for the role of Manager, based in the Ministerial Services team within the OCE. A position description can be viewed below. The role is permanent and is based in Wellington.  A one to two year secondment will also be considered for this role.

Key responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Leading and managing a team of Ministerial Services staff, including setting direction and establishing clear work programmes
  • Ensuring that DPMC delivers responses to OIA requests, Ministerial correspondence and written parliamentary questions in a timely manner to a high quality
  • Ensuring processes, procedures and requirements relating to Ministerial Servicing are understood
  • Establishing and managing effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including the Prime Minister's office and other Ministers' offices

Key attributes required to be successful include:

  • Experience leading and managing high performing teams
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Highly developed strategic analytical skills
  • Strong customer focus and commitment to excellent customer service
  • Strong eye for detail and ability to proof read, edit and quality check the work of others
  • Experience with public sector accountability mechanisms
  • Experience in a policy advice, operational or legal environment
  • Excellent relationship management skills with the ability to manage relationships at a senior level across DPMC and with Ministers' offices
  • Sound experience in providing policy advice, briefings, and other information to senior officials
  • Experience in identifying, anticipating and monitoring the development of emerging issues, managing issues as they arise, and facilitating the resolution of issues
