Job Description

Senior Policy Advisor, Policy Group, National Office (Wellington)

MOJ/1330664

  • Who's to blame when a driverless car hits a pedestrian?
  • What's the future of democracy in an increasingly digitally connected world?
  • What should the family expect from the state; what should the state expect from the family?

If you are an experienced policy professional and these sorts of questions spark your interest we would like to hear from you.

When you choose to work in the Policy Group at Justice – Tāhū o Te Ture – you'll join a successful team that is focused on making New Zealand a safe and just society. Our work is diverse and broad-ranging, with opportunities to shape thinking and drive change across the justice and social sectors. It's also complex and challenging, with new tests for your critical thinking and relationship management skills every day.

We're looking for several Senior Policy Advisors to lead work in areas such as improving outcomes for Māori and developing a more effective criminal justice system. Due to the breadth of the subject areas Justice Policy covers, we have some ability to shape individual work programmes to take into account different preferences, experience levels, and career goals.

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • experience in public policy, including applying analytical and critical thinking skills to complex issues
  • an ability to work in a dynamic environment to deliver to tight timelines
  • excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to create and maintain strong relationships
  • policy project management and planning skills.

In return, we can offer you opportunities to:

  • work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, and influence important issues
  • lead projects and coach less-experienced staff as part of a collaborative work environment
  • be part of a supportive and collegial team of experienced policy professionals
  • progress your career though the opportunities that come from a broad and varied work programme, and our commitment to your ongoing professional development.

If you are passionate about making a difference for New Zealanders and want to work for an organisation which values respect, integrity, service and excellence, come and join the Ministry working for justice.

Salary Range:  $80,501 - $108,913

To apply, complete the application form, attaching your CV and cover letter.  Applications close on Thursday 3 May.  Please contect the policy manager chairing the recruitment panel on (04) 494 9759.
