Job Description

  • Are you looking for a position where you can have a positive impact on the safety of New Zealanders?
  • Keen to improve the vibrancy and liveability of our cities and towns?
  • Want to work with an engaged and forward-thinking team?
  • Want to develop your skills and policy expertise?

Opportunity to work at the cutting edge of policy.

Transport is an essential part of life for every New Zealander. It allows us to access economic and social opportunities within New Zealand and across the globe. The Ministry of Transport is the government's chief policy adviser on transport. The Ministry is a small, collegial agency that lends itself to day-to-day variety. It's not just about road and rail, transport affects every area of our society and we need to think in broad terms.

We're looking for Policy Advisers and Senior Advisers to join our Mobility and Safety team, based in our Wellington office.

As a member of the Mobility and Safety team, you'll have the chance to work closely with central and local government, and a vast range of stakeholders, to provide advice to Ministers on relevant transport issues.

This includes:

  • the development and implementation of the Government's road safety strategy, to reduce the harm occurring on New Zealand's roads
  • initiatives to increase the uptake of walking and cycling in New Zealand
  • ensuring transport is accessible for all, including helping to support people with disabilities to have greater access to employment and social opportunities
  • exploring how to maximise the effectiveness of New Zealand's public transport operating environment
  • responding professionally and comprehensively to requests from the public and the Minister.

Ideally we're looking for:

  • Policy Advisers, with one-two years of policy development experience. We'll also consider candidates with equivalent experience providing professional advice in a legal, consulting or industry setting who can demonstrate learning agility and the ability to pick up policy quickly, or graduate advisers with a qualification in a relevant field
  • Senior Policy Advisers with three or more years of experience in a relevant field.

As a Policy Adviser, you'll take part in advising on transport issues, with opportunities to engage with stakeholders within and outside Government. You'll need to be able to write reports and enjoy doing so, but other than that the most important qualities you'll bring are a great attitude, initiative, and a genuine desire to grow your professional skills and experience. Being comfortable working autonomously and in team's is essential.

As a Senior Policy Adviser, you'll join us with solid background experience in leading and steering projects, problem-solving complex and ambiguous issues, assessing options and advising on a direction. Along with your analytical skills, you'll be a strong collaborative team-player, who flourishes coaching and mentoring others. You'll lead key programmes of work, shaping policy advice for Ministers.

Whether applying for a role as Policy Adviser or Senior Policy Adviser role, we have a strong focus on professional development, and you'll receive plenty of support to take ownership of your role.

Join this high-paced, motivated team and make your contribution to New Zealand society, now and in the future.
