About us:

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children, is the Ministry that supports children and young people in New Zealand.  Oranga Tamariki works to advance the wellbeing and positive long-term outcomes of children and young people.   In everything we do, the wellbeing and best-interests of children are paramount.  The voices of children and young people underpin the design and operation of our services.

About the role:

The Pa Harakeke Family team is responsible for the Ministry's SKIP initiative (Strategies with Kids Information for Parents). SKIP works with national and community partners to change social norms, attitudes, and behaviours to reduce child neglect and maltreatment. We do this by supporting whanau, communities and professionals to build protective factors for 0-5 year old tamariki.

The Senior Advisor Pā Harakeke will provide current evidence based information on child development and positive parenting for tamariki aged 0 to 5. The senior advisor will make the links between the information and practical ways whanau can create nurturing environments for tamariki. The Senior Advisor will support community led initiatives, using inspiring facilitation and mentoring skills.

You will draw on the latest child development science and translate this into resources for use by professionals and communities (including the Ministry's, SKIP's digital strategy, social media, and website content).

You will also partner with communities to learn about local parent experiences and co-design locally based initiatives that improve the lives of 0-5 year olds.

You will  play a central role in the development of the SKIP national strategy, liaise with key government and non-government stakeholders and contribute to the Ministry's wider vision for New Zealand children.

Your work will contribute to high quality analysis and advice for internal and external stakeholders, including advice to senior management and Ministers.

Skills and experience:

You will have the following skills and experience:

  • Ideally you will have knowledge and understand of Te Ao Maori and the raising of tamariki in that context.
  • be an excellent listener who can adapt your communication style to work with a range of audiences.
  • ability to be strategic, innovative, and think ‘outside the box' as well as taking ideas to action
  • a tertiary qualification in an appropriate field.
