Job Description

What you will do

Reporting to our Manager Resources Law you will be part of a high-performing team of military and civilian lawyers based in Wellington. You will be providing timely, accurate and effective legal advice to maintain NZDF's legal reputation, minimise legal risk and ensure legal compliance.
A normal day for an Assistant Manager will involve: 

  • Advising on commercial contractual documents including procurement processes and the negotiation, drafting and approval of a range of significant commercial contracts
  • Advising on employment matters including individual and collective negotiations and workplace investigations
  • Managing employment relationship problems including representing NZDF at mediations and Employment Relations Authority hearings
  • Advising on matters relating to the Defence Estate
  • The conduct of civil litigation involving the NZDF
  • Mentoring of junior lawyers 

What we need 

Our ideal applicant will have a comprehensive understanding of Government procurement policies, exceptional communications skills, and the ability to build effective relationships as well as a high level of discretion and confidence. You will be experienced in negotiating and drafting commercial contracts and have knowledge of relevant statute and common law.
You will have at least three years post admission experience in employment and / or commercial law with some litigation or property exposure being advantageous; a LLB Degree and the ability to hold a practising certificate as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand.

Defence Legal Services is the in-house national legal practice of the NZDF which has offices in a range of different bases, camps and headquarters, as well as deployed officers when required.  It consists of a mixture of military and civilian staff.  Within Headquarters New Zealand Defence Force, the Directorate of Legal Services is a team of legal specialists who provide strategic level legal services to CDF, the Single Services Chiefs and their staff and the other senior Defence Force personnel.  The Directorate is functionally divided into Operations Law, Personnel Law and Resources Law.

The remuneration band for this position is $106,050 to $131,003 inclusive of a 4% employer superannuation contribution

This position is 13 months fixed term until July 2019.

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.

If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
