Job Description

What you will do

As a ministerial advisor you will be part of a small dedicated team supporting the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) reponse to a recently established government inquiry, working within the NZDF's Special Inquiry Office. Your main responsibilities will include preparing responses to Official Information Act and Privacy Act requests, Select Committee questions, Parliamentary questions, ministerial letters and notes to the Minister in a timely and efficient manner. You will also provide general support where needed. This is a very specific and high profile area of work, and your opportunity to be involved at a detailed level.  
 
What we need
 
Our ideal person for this role will have excellent communication skills, especially written, and can work independently as well as collaboratively with others in this small developing team.  You will have excellent analytical skills, good attention to detail, enjoy research and can produce accurate work of quality within given deadlines.
 
You will be familiar with the legislative frame work, possess a good understanding of the OIA process, and have at least one years' experience in a similar advisory position where you have previously dealt with inquiries.  You have a relevant tertiary qualification evidencing research and writing skills and the experience and desire to hit the ground running.     
 
Who we are 

On Wednesday 11 April 2018 the Attorney-General announced a Government Inquire pursuant to the Inquiries Act 2013 into Operation Burnham and related matters. It is the Chief of Defence Forece's intent that the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) will fully and properly participate in this Inquiry. The NZDF has a substantial body of work to complete in order to; co-ordinate the NZDF participation in the Inquiry, provide appropriate support to the legal counsel representing the NZDF in the Inquiry and prepare itself and relevant people to fully and properly participate in the Inquiry. This work will be carried out by an NZDF Special Inquiry Office and will include information collection, compilation, and analysis as well as the likely preparation of evidence and submissions to the Inquiry.

This is an 18 month fixed term position.
 
The remuneration band for this position is $60,579 to $74,833 inclusive of a 4% employer superannuation contribution

Please note: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand (NZ) and be able to obtain and maintain the required level of NZ Government security clearance for the position applied for. The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
