Job Description

Fixed Term opportunity through to 31 March 2019

  • Do you have tax technical experience?
  • Are you wanting a diverse role in a great little team?
  • Combine your tax technical, liaison, training and innovative skills - pilot work for introducing a new product/service to customers is involved
  • Wellington based however working remotely may be a possibility

We need an experienced and driven taxation professional to join the Office of the Chief Tax Counsel (OCTC) in a multi-faceted position that will suit those who enjoy variety in their day-to-day work.

Joining OCTC you will be involved in:

  • Converting complex technical analysis into a form that ensures taxpayers' identity is protected when Commissioner of Inland Revenue decisions are released publicly, as well as creating guidelines and processes for these releases.

  • Being the first point of contact for:

  •  the tax technical matters dealt with by OCTC, including supporting the independence and impartiality of the adjudication function (by liaising with other parts of Inland Revenue at various stages of the disputes and litigation phases)
  • for taxpayer binding ruling applications (taxpayers apply, and pay a fee for these rulings, so they have certainty on the tax position for proposed complex and often high profile transactions)
  • various matters involving the Official Information and Privacy Acts

  • Providing up-to-the-minute ‘intelligence', and contributing to discussions about tax matters, for a website aimed at achieving high quality interpretive decisions

  • Developing and providing training in an effective and innovative way (taking account of e-learning and other approaches in a digital world) for people involved in complex tax technical work

To succeed in this diverse role you will ideally have:

  • Experience in tax with an understanding of the New Zealand tax system and legislation, the technical issues that arise for Inland Revenue's legal and tax technical personnel (and the situations where these occur). A legal qualification would also be helpful
  • Experience working with Revenue Legislation and in particular the Disputes Process provisions
  • Effective research, analytical, problem solving and decision making skills
  • An ability to delve deeply and broadly, and to think laterally and creatively, so that the best options can be considered (and sound and practical recommendations developed)
  • Clear and effective written (a clear, concise, readable style) and verbal communication skills
  • A proactive ‘getting things done', and innovative approach towards all aspects of your work
  • An understanding of good information management practices, relevant information technology tools and approaches
  • Some practical website experience (or at least a keenness and ability to develop this skill)

So if you're looking for a new challenge we'd love to hear from you!
