Job Description

Wellington, Permanent, Full time – Residential Youth Worker

Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children are dedicated to supporting any child in New Zealand whose wellbeing is at significant risk of harm now, or in the future. We also work with young people who may have offended, or are likely to offend.

Our belief is that in the right environment, with the right people surrounding and nurturing them, any child can, and should flourish.

If you are passionate about making a difference in the lives of at-risk young people, join our supportive team who are fully committed to achieving positive outcomes for young people, whānau and the community.

We are now looking for permanent Residential youth workers to join our care and protection residence in Lower Hutt.

We are a passionate group, dedicated to improving outcomes for children and young people in our care and to support them to realise their potential.  We are dedicated to unlocking potential in our young people, who are always seeking new opportunities, inspiring others, and making connections, and building relationships built on trust and respect.

Working in a residential environment is both challenging and rewarding. We're looking for people who are committed to working with children and young people to help them realise their talents, who have knowledge or experience in the care of at-risk youth or relevant field, for example, education, health or social services.

A positive role model for others, you are values-driven, enjoy working collaboratively and are motivated by building strong, open relationships with others. You are committed to leading by example at all times.

If you want to be part of a team that is passionate about positively changing the course or pathway a young person is travelling on, we want to hear from you.  The residence operates 24 hours per day, seven days a week, and these positions follow a 21-day roster pattern working shifts (6.00am – 2.30pm and 2.00pm – 10.30pm) including weekends and public holidays.

To be successful in your application, you will have:

  • meet the VCA safety checking and Ministry vetting requirements (police check etc.)
  • have a full clean New Zealand drivers' licence
  • flexibility to work on a roster pattern
  • have a belief and commitment to ensuring that the paramount element of importance in your work is the safety of and outcomes for children and young persons
  • be a strong team player and positive role model
  • demonstrate initiative and sound judgement, with an ability to ‘think on your feet'
  • have experience developing rapport with young people
  • be self-directed in work practices
  • effective time management
  • strong communication skills (you will need to write succinct, factual and audience appropriate reports)
  •     experience in youth work as an employee or volunteer, or have relevant life skills.
