Job Description

  • Contribute to MBIE's goal of Growing New Zealand for all by promoting New Zealand's international connections to support the flow of trade, people, capital and ideas.
  • Work across MBIE and wider Government to make connections and provide policy input across multiple areas of work
  • Work with a team of dedicated, experienced policy staff, in a branch dealing with a number of major government priorities

About the team

The Science, Innovation and International branch brings together MBIE's international work in one branch to optimise the links that can be made in New Zealand's international connections. It brings together the policy teams working to maximise the value from science, innovation and trade policy by ensuring they are connected with business and that businesses have the ability to commercialise new knowledge and innovate.

The International Strategy team has a cross-MBIE mandate to lead our understanding and advice on internationalisation and ensure a one-MBIE contribution to inter-agency and whole of government processes. The Trade and Regulatory Cooperation team promotes business innovation, competitiveness and trade flows through the integration of domestic and international regulation, standards and rules. Both teams work closely with other parts of MBIE, the Treasury, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, regulators across government, foreign governments and international organisations.

About this role

This position requires a strategic thinker who is able to make connections across MBIE, New Zealand government agencies, and internationally. The Senior Policy Advisor will be required to contribute across a variety of internal and external forums, and will be expected to help shape and influence the development of priorities. This will require good relationship management with both internal and external stakeholders.

Cross-team working is an important aspect of the branch's work and at times you are likely to work closely with other teams within the branch.

  • Experience influencing a range of stakeholders, including at senior levels
  • Skills in negotiation and stakeholder management, to build and maintain relationships and partnerships
