Job Description

Principal Solicitor

State Service Commission

The State Services Commission leads New Zealand's public service to deliver the best services and results for New Zealanders and New Zealand.  Working for the Commission is about being part of a small, agile team with a big ambition for New Zealand and New Zealanders.

We are expanding our legal team and looking for an experienced professional who is confident, a straight shooter, and sees things through. To be successful, you will thrive in an environment that is fast-paced and where some navigation is required.  You will be passionate about public service and making a difference.

You must have:

  • a law degree and a current practising certificate (or ability to hold a practising certificate)
  • extensive experience in practising law, preferably in government
  • a thorough knowledge of administrative law

Familiarity with the State Sector, Crown Entities, and Public Finance Acts is preferable together with an understanding of the public management system, government and parliamentary processes, especially legislative process.

Employment law expertise would be beneficial but not required. Experience with managing legal programmes or projects, such as a legislative project, or with delivering machinery of government change, would be beneficial. However, we also know that the right person will be able to learn these things on the job.

Working in a small team alongside our Chief Legal Officer, Principal Solicitor, and Principal Advisor, Legal Policy, you will be able to operate with collegial support but a high degree of independence. Working at the Commission will give you a unique perspective on New Zealand's public management system and will equip you well for future opportunities.

We're open to flexible working. Andrew Royle, Chief Legal Officer would also be very happy to talk to you about the role.  You can contact him on

Applications to be completed online only by 9am Friday 1 June 2018.
