The Policing 2021 programme is transforming the business of policing over the next four years and we are committed to investing in our people. With a new structure and leadership, the Policy and Partnerships Group is developing to support this transformation. We are recruiting a new Manager to lead one of our four policy teams.


We work right across policing and with partner agencies to deliver public policy change that help us deliver our mission of being the safest country.  Our group provides advice on a remarkable range of policy issues, from vulnerable children, youth development and family harm, through serious criminal offending and international organised crime, to drug policy, firearms and other legislation, road and transport safety, national security, emergency management and terrorism. 


The diversity of our business makes for a fascinating and challenging range of policy opportunities in the sectors we span - the social, justice, transport, border control and national security sectors. Our work is almost entirely delivered with partner agencies. We provide strategically aligned policy advice in a very dynamic delivery environment and our work effects New Zealanders every day.


We are currently seeking to fill one vacancy on our Management team. The Manager of the Crime Prevention Team leads the Crime Prevention Team's policy work with Police operational groups, and government and non-government agencies across the justice and social sectors. Its work spans  legislative changes and policy relating to social policy issues, in particular crime prevention, family harm, child abuse, sexual violence, youth and child offending, victims, Māori and diversity issues.


As a Manager in the Policy Group, you will:

  • manage and support your team to deliver their best work, to expand their knowledge and to develop their skills;
  • lead analysis and development of high quality advice on policy projects initiated by the Minister of Police or Police Executive;
  • work as a partner on policy issues and legislation, developed by other agencies and cross government groups; and
  • provide an effective link between policy formulation and operational policing to develop a whole-of-police position.


Successful candidates will be expected to bring a range of relevant management ability, policy skills, knowledge and experience to the role.

Special Requirements:

The successful applicant will be required to undergo a full reference and security check, and be able to obtain, and maintain, a Government Security Clearance to Top Secret level. Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand (NZ) and be able to obtain and maintain the required level of NZ Government security clearance for the position applied for. The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Police are as follows:

Higher Level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided in this country continuously for at least the last ten years; or
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last ten years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
