Job Description

The Ministry for the Environment's purpose is to make Aotearoa New Zealand the most liveable place in the world for our children, their children and their mokopuna.

We are the government's primary advisor on the environment and its relationship to New Zealand's economy. We make sure our environment supports New Zealand's prosperity – economic, social and cultural – without compromising it for future generations.   Our environmental stewardship makes a real difference for New Zealanders.

We are respected for our strategic view and fresh thinking. We design innovative, durable and sustainable solutions to complex challenges.  To do this, we draw on the diverse talents of our people and build strong, purposeful and productive relationships with our stakeholders.

Hono Tahua – Communities and Freshwater Investments

The Hono Tahua team supports local government, iwi/hapū and the community to make a positive difference to our environment and freshwater. We do this by managing Crown investments through projects funded from the Ministry's environment and clean-up funds (grant funding).

Our full-time Senior Analyst requires the ability to lead, oversee, develop and implement our Crown investment programmes. You will have the skills to be able to evaluate and make continual improvements to those programmes by being innovative, applying design thinking and strategic investment principles.  The ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including Councils, NGOs and iwi/hapū is also critical.

You will need to enjoy being responsive, flexible, working with stakeholders and tackling tricky challenges.  Ideally, you will bring with you extensive experience in a project management, investment management or an engagement role, preferably within central government. You will be able to demonstrate:

  • Strong experience and knowledge of project management, contract management and grant funding.
  • A thorough understanding of environmental management in New Zealand including working with community-led environmental initiatives.
  • Evaluation and data analysis skills.
  • Natural curiosity paired with excellent problem solving skills and communication skills.
  • The ability to think quickly, strategically and manage ambiguity.
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring.

 You will get:

  • the opportunity to grow your experience working with Ministers and a range of stakeholders
  • a strong focus on your career development needs  and aspirations
