Job Description

About MPI

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is responsible for ‘Growing and Protecting New Zealand'. It's no mean feat and we have a team of hard working and dedicated people in a variety of roles supporting us to make this happen! MPI provides a range of services to ensure New Zealand is protected from biological risk and that the food New Zealand businesses produce is safe and suitable for us all to consume. Our overall ambition is for New Zealand to be the most trusted source of high value natural products in the world. Join us to help this ambition become a reality.

About our team

The Sector Partnerships and Programmes (SPP) branch is dedicated to unlocking the sustainable growth potential of the primary sector.

We are responsible for leading the development and implementation of a range of investment programmes that support economic development, sustainable resource use and productivity in the primary sector.

We partner with industries, companies, landowners, growers, producers, regional bodies and researchers to find better ways of using resources (human, financial and natural) and to develop profitable, desirable forestry, food and fibre products for local and overseas customers.

The Sustainable Growth Programmes (SGP) team which this role sits within, manages funds contributing to sustainable growth and productivity, whilst also supporting sustainable land management and afforestation funds.  The funds managed include; the Sustainable Farming Fund (SFF), the Hill Country Erosion Fund (HCE), the Afforestation Grant Fund (AGS) and the Erosion Control Funding Programme (ECFP).

About the role

We need someone who can jump in and join our Sustainable Growth Programmes team to help manage the Government grants and funding programmes that we are responsible for, - no two funds are the same and no two working days will be either.

To be successful in this role you will need to be a self-starter with good prioritisation and time management skills. You will need to use your knowledge of project management/implementation principles and be a good networker when interacting with our wide range of stakeholders. Experience in Government funding programs would also be advantageous but not essential. Some understanding of the primary sectors is also an advantage.

5-10 years relevant experience in the agricultural or horticultural sector or a highly similar working environment; or extensive experience as a business adviser in those sectors, as well as previous experience in establishing and effectively maintaining collaborative relationships with stakeholders, Maori and Government agencies.

To fulfil the requirements of this role a security clearance classification to the level of Confidential is required.

How / why to apply?

Our work stretches all the way from the Beehive to the border. If you want a career where you help to grow and protect New Zealand in a very real way then this is it. Our team is collegial, supportive and hard working. MPI has a focus on career pathways so this is the first step in your career with us and we will help you grow.
