  • Work to create communities where road, housing, retail and commercial are all connected
  • Bring your passion for system thinking and urban, spatial and transport system planning

About us

At the NZ Transport Agency, it all starts with our people. The organisation's performance and success depends on the people who choose to make this a great place to work and make a difference for New Zealand. The Transport Agency has a strong future focus, understanding that new technologies and changing customer expectations mean the transport system we know today will not be the one we deliver in ten years time.

In our Strategy, Policy and Planning group, our aim is to set the long-term direction of the land transport system and enable its achievement through collaborative planning and drive organisation-wide success through effective monitoring of delivery performance.

The role

The Lead Strategic Planner will be at the forefront of our most complex issues involving high growth urban centres, regional economic development and have a role in developing ‘whole of transport sector' responses.  You will do this in partnership with our transport sector partners, by developing strong alignment on evidence, economic and social outcomes and strategic system solutions.

You'll get the opportunity to use your strategic thinking to lead, develop and promote transport system solutions, with a national focus. You'll be a big picture thinker and be able to wax lyrical about urban development and integration. Your strong relationship management skills will enable you to build effective partnerships and stakeholder relationships across the sector to bring information together and provide integrated system solutions to our customers, as well as mentor and lead in a teaming environment. Your background will be in planning, land use and/or urban development and you'll be a thought leader in your area of subject matter expertise.

What you will bring

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Proven expertise and experience working with the machinery of Government and the decision making process including an in-depth understanding of the local and regional transport and strategic planning processes
  • Proven experience in a senior role with a high level of strategic, analytical and conceptual thinking in a complex environment, preferably in the transport or infrastructure strategy and planning area
  • Proven experience in leading, influencing and building credibility across a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience working with partners and stakeholders to align evidence, outcomes and prioritise system responses
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a teaming environment, model effective leadership and mentor other members of the team
  • Excellent communication skills to deliver complex information in a concise and understandable way
  • Sound project management skills, including a high delivery focus and excellent attention to detail

This role could be based in Wellington or Auckland.
