Good quality regulation matters for our future economic performance and the well-being of New Zealanders. The Regulatory Quality Team is responsible for the oversight and development of the Government's regulatory management system, which seeks to maintain and enhance the quality of new and existing government regulatory systems.  We seek to perform this stewardship role by working collaboratively with regulatory policy agencies to:

  • Operate and improve the regulatory impact system
  • Embed a regulatory stewardship approach to the ongoing management of their regulatory systems
  • Advise on the development of the expectations, tools and processes of the regulatory management system


The Role

  • Work with regulatory agencies on the development of their regulatory proposals to ensure they are robust, fit-for-purpose, and meet the RIA requirements.
  • Contribute to initiatives to build the capability of agencies to carry our regulatory impact analysis, including through training and guidance material
  • Assess and advise Ministers on the quality of significant regulatory impact analysis
  • Identify and provide advice on opportunities to improve the tools and requirements of the regulatory management system and the quality of regulation so that regulation provides long-term benefits to New Zealanders, and
  • Support regulatory agencies to take a regulatory stewardship approach to the management of their regulatory systems.


About You

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Experience working on public policy, particularly in analysis of regulatory issues and options, with at least 5 years' analytical experience.
  • Strong relationship management skills
  • Some experience with cost-benefit analysis would be an advantage
  • The ability to communicate complex information to a diverse audience including ministers
