Job Description

The New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) protects and promotes New Zealand through world class border management.

We are seeking a highly motivated advisor to fill a Correspondence, Review and Ministerial Advisor position in the Correspondence, Reviews, and Ministerial Servicing team within the Customs Policy Group. We will consider applications from candidates based in Wellington, Christchurch or Auckland as the team is based in all three locations.

The ideal candidate for these roles will need to be politically "savvy" and comfortable dealing directly across the different business areas within Customs. If you are the person we need, this is an opportunity for you to step into a role, which can have an influence internally across almost every part of Customs and be a key influencer on how the outside world views the organisation.

It is desirable if you have worked in a Correspondence and Ministerial team previously and be used to interpreting legislation and producing high quality, timely responses to ministerial and departmental correspondence. Correspondence includes requests under the Official Information Act 1982 and Privacy Act 1993, Parliamentary questions, all ministerial correspondence and departmental complaints, inter-agency requests for information, as well as Customs' reviews of seizures. 

Your previous relationship management skills will be important. Key stakeholders inside the organisation and externally, such as the Minister's office, are key to you gathering the right information. We are looking for people who can pin down the focus of challenging and broad questions and have very effective written and oral communication skills.  As there is a high workload, time management and a focus on outcomes is essential.

Team dynamics are an important part of building a highly effective team in a high-pressure environment, so we are looking for people who demonstrate a "can do" attitude, takes the initiative, and is a great team player.

Applicants must have a New Zealand Permanent Residency or Citizenship and be able to obtain and maintain the required security clearance and pass a drug test. Please submit a CV and cover letter that clearly demonstrates your ability to meet the skills and competencies required for the role.
