EPA is the government agency responsible for regulating activities that affect New Zealand's environment. New Zealand has some unique environments, a unique culture, and a special relationship with tangata whenua (indigenous people). In doing our work we carefully balance social, economic, safety, and environmental factors to protect the way of life New Zealanders want now, and in the future. Our work must be done in a way that: contributes to the efficient, effective and transparent management of New Zealand's environment and natural and physical resources enables New Zealand to meet its international obligations. We have particular responsibilities under the environmental Acts we manage. Our role includes: Administering nationally significant proposals Managing chemicals in New Zealand Regulating activities in the Exclusive Economic Zone Administering the NZ Emissions Trading Scheme Making decisions about New Organisms Public awareness, and; Science leadership Team Leader Hazardous Substances Reassessments (Applications team) We are looking for a team leader to lead our reassessments team in our Hazardous Substances Applications area. A new reassessments programme has been developed, where we screen, assess and evaluate information about our most concerning chemicals already approved in New Zealand, and provide well-reasoned and expert guidance to decision makers as part of a statutory process considering their reassessment. It s a great time to join us and help make a difference in shaping the future of chemical management in NZ as we embark on a number of exciting and future focused initiatives, including a chemical modernisation programme. What we re looking for We d like to hear from people and process leaders who have the ability to lead multidisciplinary work, and manage a schedule of work which relates to complex risk assessment and a variety of stakeholders. Experience working in a fast moving busy regulatory environment would be advantageous. Specific deliverables will be to lead a team of staff, and work with internal and external specialists to bring together relevant information for chemicals to be considered and possibly reassessed under the HSNO Act. The team is developing and expanding, you will have the opportunity to build this really important part of EPA. The nature of the work is varied and you will be provided with interesting and challenging opportunities to enhance your career as a regulator. Knowledge and experience required The successful applicant will have: * Experienced people leadership, ideally in a regulatory environment * Strong process management and a proven history of successful delivery * Ability to establish, enable, grow the team, with a commitment to continuous learning and improvement * Understanding of risk assessment, management and managing complexity * Sound judgment, common sense and a pragmatic approach * Experience in establishing and maintaining good relationships, internally and externally * To be self motivated, driven to deliver, able to manage multiple tasks and have strong attention to detail * Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and partner with others to achieve collective deadlines and objectives, and to manage a multidisciplinary process * Appreciation of customer service being key to our role as a proactive regulator What we can offer you We have fantastic central city offices on Lambton Quay and offer a range of stimulating professional develoopment and social activities.
