Job Description

Oranga Tamariki – Casual Residential Youth Worker

  • Help young people find a direction in life outside the justice system
  • Maintain a safe environment for you to work in and our young people to live in
  • Develop and deliver programmes and activities
  • Be a positive role model and provide support and aroha

At Oranga Tamariki children always come first – and by helping young people achieve positive life goals, it's a great use for your skills.

Putting children first guides everything we do at Oranga Tamariki. At our residential facility, Te Au rere a te Tonga, Palmerston North, we provide the young people in our care with support, aroha and respect, and help them to take a positive direction in life.

As a Casual Residential Youth Worker, you'll work directly with those young people to develop and deliver activities and programmes that give them opportunities to create and work towards goals. You'll be a champion for them, helping them recognise and realise their own potential, and give them hope to turn their lives around.

You'll need to be a realistic and resilient person to succeed in this role. These are young people who have experienced significant and serious challenges, and have often been in the youth justice system for some time. The adults in our facilities are potentially the first who genuinely care about them, and you need to treat them with empathy, tolerance and understanding to gain their trust.

So great communication and listening skills are vital, as is your ability to resolve conflict and be a positive role model. You'll bring an approach to your work that's aligned with Oranga Tamariki's – valuing fairness and sincerity, treating whanau with respect, and long-term thinking – and an understanding of Māori and Pasifika culture.

Your qualifications will likely include tertiary study in a relevant discipline, and it would be a huge advantage if you have experience developing learning and recreational programmes for young people.

If you genuinely care about providing young people with direction and hope, and giving them something to aspire to, you'll get immense satisfaction from this role. Putting young people first, recognising their potential, and helping them break the cycle benefits not just them, but all Kiwis.
