Job Description

What you will do

As one of two Enterprise Architects reporting to the Principal Enterprise Architect within the Communications and Information Systems (CIS) branch of NZDF your work will enable NZDF and CIS Branch Leadership to make investment decisions that balance and prioritise current operational demands, disruptions, and opportunities with the longer-term strategic vision of NZDF.

You will advocate a user-centric, Cloud-first philosophy, supporting the design of a fit-for-purpose, integrated and accessible Defence Information Environment (DIE).    You will provide technology guidance, road maps, principles, standards, and good practices and develop architectures for the DIE.

This will be a fascinating and varied role where you will work collaboratively across multiple functional areas of NZDF and with multiple technology stacks.

Who we are

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force contributes to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.  As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to crisis at short notice.

CIS Branch provides the core information and communication services that underpin New Zealand Defence operations.  We enable the interaction between our people, our partners and the broader defence community, at home and abroad.

CIS Branch is totally unique, we are entrusted to deliver and support the Defence technology that helps keep New Zealanders safe. We work locally and globally to provide solutions to military-specific challenges and to ensure Defence information can flow efficiently and securely between New Zealand and our Allies.

Why Us

Let's just say we're not your typical corporate IT department:

  • We provide support to more than 14,000 military and civilian Defence Force personnel who are dispersed on seven continents, often in geographically remote, hostile environments;

  • Our solutions are deployed to personal devices, vehicles, ships and planes;

  • We're here to deliver military outcomes, not just the technology behind them.

It's also the perfect time to join us. We are in the process of transforming our culture and the way we work so we truly understand our customers and partner with them strategically.

By joining us as we evolve to a modern, shared information and technology platform, you will be part of a culture that endears trust, empowers decision-making and respects people.

What we need

We are keen to hear from you if you are a highly skilled and customer focussed ICT professional with a solid background as an ICT architect or senior business analyst and the ability to translate organisational needs into strategy and architecture.

You will need to be capable of building sound working relationships and be able to influence and provide expert advice so that you can become a trusted partner.

In addition we are keen to hear from you if you have:

  • A broad understanding of business and ICT, specifically working with ICT as a shared service;

  • Experience in an enterprise architectural discipline within an organisation of a similar size, including expert knowledge of architectural and ICT frameworks such as DODAF, TOGAF, ITIL, and/or military architecture frameworks;

  • Exposure to ICT project management  - including capability development;

  • The ability to provide intellectual and professional leadership - including experience mentoring and developing junior staff and peers.

  • Experience in applying agile and lean methodologies (e.g. SAFe).

An understanding of All-of-Government resources for cloud architectures and implementation plans (including risk and security considerations) is an advantage.

Please note that you must be able and willing to travel within New Zealand and overseas if required.

Come and be part of the change.  What we do matters!

The full remuneration band for this position is $117,762 - $145,471 inclusive of a 4% employer superannuation depending on experience.

Also check out the great benefits for you and your family when you join NZDF!
