Job Description

We are a Ministry with a commitment to putting  children and young people at the heart of everything we do and say.

Our Family Homes are places of safety where children and young people can get on with life, while we work with families to find them a permanent loving home, either with their whānau or in their community.  Our casual Family Home Relievers form part of a casual pool of staff that provides care and support at the Family Home in the absence of the primary caregiver.  You will be responsible for maintaining a safe, caring, responsible and supportive environment in the family home where our Family Home Caregivers have worked hard to keep our children and young people safe.

Casual Family Home Relievers at Oranga Tamariki carry out a variety of tasks which can include:

  • supporting Caregivers in the day-to-day running of the Family Homes
  • day to day care of and providing emotional support to children and young people
  • running the Family Home when Caregivers are absent
  • meal preparation

To work as a Family Home Reliever you will need to:

  • meet the Vulnerable Children' Act safety checking and Ministry vetting requirements (full police check etc.)
  • be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident as this Level 4 or 5 ANZSCO classification role.
  • have a full clean New Zealand drivers' licence
  • have a sound understanding of Tikanga Maori
  • demonstrate successful experience working alongside children and young people with challenging behaviours
  • show experience in caregiving, community work, or working with young people
  • a high level of resilience and motivation
  • be a strong team player and positive role model
