Job Description

  • Fixed Term (3 Years), Wellington

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join the Mental Health Team within our Mental Health and Addictions Directorate. The Directorate works collectively with Health and other key sectors to deliver core and priority outcomes. The role of the team is to contribute to all people in New Zealand thriving in their communities by reducing the impact of mental distress, mental illness and addiction so that they may get well, stay well and live well.  The mental health team provides whole of system leadership to facilitate and support equity of mental health and wellbeing outcome, through a system that is inclusive of all people and provides a collective response.

As the Advisor or Senior Advisor you will be contributing to both the team's work programme and a priority programme for the Ministry of Health. The current work programme spans the full continuum of mental health care from prevention through self-care, primary care and specialist services. 

The team also provides advice to Government in relation to the mental health sector in New Zealand.

 To be successful in this role as an advisor you will have:

  • Experience in the health or other relevant social sector
  • Excellent relationship building and interpersonal skills
  • Resilience and an ability to work effectively as a team player in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to self-manage including excellent prioritisation skills in accordance with agreed team objectives
  • Ability to analyse complex information to provide advice to a wide range of audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects involving diverse stakeholders
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, particularly the ability to communicate clearly, concisely and in plain language

In addition, a senior advisor is expected to have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification (for example in public health, health management, or of a clinical nature)
  • An ability to support and/or mentor others, lead projects and activities to ensure a successful outcome
  • Understanding of the roles and responsibilities of New Zealand Government Agencies.  Including knowledge of Health sector funding and processes to commission services across the sector is preferable
  • Experience in developing and implementing policy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of quality management, process design and/or risk management strategies
  • Knowledge and understanding of machinery of government.
  • Experience in delivering successful complex projects i.e. demonstrated knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques necessary for the effective management of projects from initiation through to implementation and closing projects.
