Job Description

What you will do

As Project Accountant reporting to the Manager Capability and Strategic Projects within NZDF Finance, you'll join a team of motivated, high achievers to support a strong and consistent approach to costing in support of long term planning for NZDF military capabilities and infrastructure.

Your primary focus will be on financial support to assigned capital projects through:

  • ensuring that business cases identify whole of life costs

  • providing financial and project accounting advice and information to project managers across the capability life cycle

  • reporting on the financial progress of projects.

In addition you will contribute to:

  • best practice whole of life costing across the organisation

  • continuous improvement and on-going development of costing models, including supporting documentation

  • outputs that communicate insightful analysis to senior staff and stakeholders.

In particular you'll be providing finance support to projects in our Communications and Information Services (CIS) Branch which provides the core information and communication services that underpin New Zealand Defence operations.  CIS branch enables the interaction between our people, our partners and the broader defence community, at home and abroad.

CIS Branch is totally unique.  CIS is entrusted to deliver and support the Defence technology that helps keep New Zealanders safe. They work locally and globally to provide solutions to military-specific challenges and to ensure Defence information can flow efficiently and securely between New Zealand and our Allies.

There will be opportunities in this role for you to demonstrate your initiative and contribute to process improvement.

Some travel within New Zealand may be required.

What we need

This role would be a good fit for you if you are a finance or accounting professional with at least 3 years' experience in a professional services organisation and a desire to move into a bigger environment and/or work more closely with the business.

To be considered you will be a team oriented, self-starter with excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, and the ability to think broadly about outcomes/impacts of the work you do.   

In particular you'll have

  • Good theoretical understanding of and practical experience in life-cycle costing, financial modelling and valuation techniques

  • Skills in costing and modelling outputs that enable business decision making

  • Solid MS Office skills, with particular expertise in Microsoft Excel

  • Excellent technical accounting skills and knowledge of relevant internal and external standards

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of management accounting and financial management principles and practices

  • Excellent research, analysis and financial problem-solving skills

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical financial information effectively to non-financial audiences, orally and in writing.

Experience with a major ERP package such as SAP or Oracle, and a reporting or budgeting tool such as TM1 or Cognos is highly desirable however not essential.

You will also need to be CA qualified or at least working towards this.

The remuneration band for this position is $78,647 - $97,152  inclusive of a 4% employer superannuation contribution however expect to appoint around $80-$85k depending on experience.

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided in this country continuously for at least the last ten years, OR

  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last ten years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.

If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
