Job Description
The Environmental Protection Authority is the government agency responsible for regulating activities that affect New Zealand's environment. New Zealand has some unique environments, a unique culture, and a special relationship with tangata whenua (indigenous people). In doing our work we carefully balance social, economic, safety, and environmental factors to protect the way of life New Zealanders want now, and in the future. Our work must be done in a way that: contributes to the efficient, effective and transparent management of New Zealand's environment and natural and physical resources enables New Zealand to meet its international obligations. We have particular responsibilities under the environmental Acts we manage. Our role includes: Administering nationally significant proposals Managing chemicals in New Zealand Regulating activities in the Exclusive Economic Zone Administering the NZ Emissions Trading Scheme Making decisions about New Organisms Public awareness, and; Science leadership Manager EEZ Compliance We are looking for a self motivated compliance and enforcement professional to manage our EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) Compliance team. What we re looking for We d love to hear from people operating at a senior level in the regulatory compliance environment. Managerial experience in the oil, gas, mining or comparable industries would be of value. You must have a good understanding of compliance principles and processes and a working knowledge of environmental legislation, preferably in the offshore marine environment. Experience in leading audits and inspections will also be highly regarded. You will be managing a team who carry out front line regulatory work, so the ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with stakeholders is essential. The role is also responsible for the monitoring, compliance and enforcement function for activities covered by the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012. This includes providing quality technical and procedural advice and support for monitoring and compliance activities. Knowledge and experience required The successful applicant for this managerial position will: * have a relevant tertiary qualification in a qualification in engineering, marine science, resource management and / or environmental management * be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of dealing with complex regulatory issues * show proven experience of successfully leading and managing a high performing team * have strong understanding of compliance principals and processes and a working knowledge and experience of environmental legislation What we can offer you We re committed to creating an environment that supports collaboration and innovation.
