Job Description

Residential Youth Worker (permanent) - Te Puna Wai O Tuhinapo Youth Justice Residence, Christchurch

  • Help young people find a direction in life outside the justice system.
  • Maintain a safe environment for our young people to live in and you to work in.
  • Develop and deliver programmes and activities to help young people reach their potential.
  • Be a positive role model and provide support and aroha.

At Oranga Tamariki we put rangatahi first. Putting young people first guides everything we do at Oranga Tamariki.  At our residential facilities we provide the young people in our care with support, safety, aroha and respect.  We help them to reach their potential and maintain a positive direction in life.

As a Residential Youth Worker, you'll work directly with those young people to develop and deliver activities and programmes that give them opportunities to create and work towards positive goals. You'll be a champion for them, helping them recognise and realise their own potential, and give them hope to turn their lives around.

You'll need to be a realistic and resilient person to succeed in this role. These are young people who have experienced significant and serious challenges, and have often been in the Youth Justice system for some time.  The adults in our facilities are potentially the first who genuinely care about them, and you will need to treat them with empathy, tolerance, consistency and understanding to build a positive relationship.

Great communication and listening skills are vital in this role, as is your ability to resolve conflict and be a positive role model.  You'll find ways to maintain the safety of staff, young people and the community while helping young people realise their full potential. Your approach to work should be aligned with our vision, valuing fairness and sincerity, treating whānau with respect, focussing on long-term outcomes for young people while working with an understanding of Māori and Pacifica culture.

Ideally your qualifications will likely include tertiary study in a relevant discipline, and it would be a huge advantage if you have experience developing learning and recreational programmes for young people.  Because we are a 24/7 residential facility, you'll also need to be happy working shifts, i.e. morning shift (6.30am-3.00pm) and afternoon shift (1.30pm-10.00pm), these shifts also could be working on weekends and public holidays.

If you genuinely care about providing young people with direction and hope, and giving them something to aspire to, you'll get immense satisfaction from this role.  Putting young people first, recognising their potential, and helping them break the cycle benefits not just them, but all Kiwis.
