The New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) is responsible for protecting New Zealand against threats to the border, facilitating the legitimate movement of people and goods and collecting customs and excise revenue on behalf of the Crown. Click here to see an example of the work that we do.

 

The Customs Investigations Unit actively works in New Zealand and internationally, including with a range of partner agencies, to disrupt and prevent transnational organisation crime groups targeting New Zealand. We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced thought leader to be appointed to the role of Manager Operations. This role is a key contributor to the work we do and will support the further development of Customs investigations capability.

 

As Manager Operations, you will have a key role in enhancing the capabilities and professional development of the investigations teams, using innovative approaches to solve problems and address challenges, and setting the future direction of the work area. The Investigations Unit is about to go through a significant period of growth and this role will be a primary lead for this work and to help us shape our future operating model in accordance with our enforcement strategy.

 

To be successful in this role, you will bring a good mix of experience including leadership of process improvements, and investigative and technical expertise as well as and good practise implementation. You will be able to demonstrate previous implementation of work programmes that align with organisational strategy, the building of effective capabilities and teams, strong problem solving skills, and be able to mitigate risks effectively. Having excellent interpersonal skills, using both verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to ensure clarity of message and achieve the desired result are essential.

 

The successful applicant will represent Customs in a range of bilateral and multi-agency fora, including at a senior level. You will offer the Service considerable people, negotiating and influencing skills, with demonstrable experience in providing sound advice to a diverse range of people, including senior leaders. Being comfortable working across a broad range of topics is important and you will bring previous relevant experience at a similar level to this position.

 

We welcome applications from those who wish to join us permanently, but also from those who may like to join us on a secondment basis. Secondments as well as flexible working arrangements will be considered on a case by case basis.

 

The indicative remuneration range is from $120-135,000.

 

Applicants must be a New Zealand Citizen. The successful applicant will be required to pass a drug test and you will also be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance to Top Secret level.
