Job Description

The Treasury is the New Zealand Government's lead economic and financial advisor. Our vision is to raise living standards for all New Zealanders.

We have an opportunity for a Principal Advisor to join our Skills, Employment, and Enterprise team. The team is responsible for Treasury's Labour Market, Immigration, Tertiary Education, Science and Innovation, Competition, Economic Development, Collective Bargaining, and Business Growth policy advice.

If you want to work in a multi-disciplinary team that provides policy advice to Government across a significant portion of the economy and Government work programme then this is an ideal role for you. You will work closely with other central agencies and government departments and will have significant opportunities to influence and help shape a number of policy agendas, including providing advice directly to the Minister of Finance. The Principal Advisor role is a new position in the Skills, Employment, and Enterprise team. The role will be primarily based in the Labour Market grouping of our team, but will have an intellectual leadership function across the team's full work programme.

What we are looking for:

We are looking for someone with public policy experience, particularly in leading analysis and reform in complex policy areas. If you understand how to use your communication, leadership, relationship and analytical skills to get traction on complex policy problems, then we would like to hear from you.

Expertise in labour market policy would be an advantage, and a depth of understanding in one or more of the areas the team advises on is essential.

For appointment at the Principal Advisor level, you will already have a significant breadth and depth of analytical experience. This role will provide you with the opportunity to bring innovative thought leadership to the development of advice and help find creative solutions to complex problems. We will be looking to you to provide intellectual and people leadership across the Treasury's teams and more broadly across the wider Treasury. You will also have a demonstrated ability to mentor and to support others to develop their expertise.

We can offer:

  • Interesting and stimulating work across a diverse range of areas, with opportunities to improve living standards for New Zealanders.
  • A commitment to providing work and training opportunities that support your development and career aspirations.
  • The opportunity to work in a supportive and high-performing team that is focused on development, constructive debate and collective impact.

Secondments from other government agencies will be considered and please talk to us about flexible work options.

Applications close - 30 September. All applications must be made online.
