Job Description

Newly Created Multi-Disciplinary Team focused on Mental Health Wellbeing
Opportunity to implement, influence and refine a new Model of Care to transform intervention and support for prisoners vulnerable to self-harm or suicide.

New Zealand and international literature has established that prisoners have greater mental health needs than the general population, and have a greater risk of self-harm and suicide.

The Department of Corrections devotes significant time and resource into caring for prisoners vulnerable to self-harm and suicide.  Alongside the significant recent investments in mental health services, the Department has identified an opportunity to take a more holistic and long-term approach to improve the well-being of those in our care.

Consequently, Corrections are developing a new, prison-wide model of care to transform intervention and support for prisoners vulnerable to self-harm or suicide.  This model will be responsive, flexible and appropriate to the needs of the individual prisoner.

As a result we are creating multi-disciplinary teams whose focus will be to implement the model of care and influence the refining of the model. These teams will be supported by an allied workforce, namely custodial staff, ensuring a safe environment to work within.

Leveraging your social work experience, you will be able to input and directly influence the future direction this model takes whilst working with individuals alongside your team to develop individual care plans for prisoners, including triage, interventions, transition and discharge.

Key accountabilities will encompass:
  • Working as part of the team providing assessment, planning and interventions with those who present with a range of complex physical and psycho-social needs
  • Providing support and enhancing wellbeing of those people who are vulnerable to self-harming behaviour or suicide
  • Managing a caseload with high complexity, undertaking comprehensive assessments of those identified as vulnerable
  • Formulating individualised social work interventions that contribute to the individual care plan
  • Service Improvement

This position offers you the opportunity to work in a team solely focused on the objective of improving wellbeing for vulnerable prisoners.  As part of this team this position will have significant contribution focusing on mental health of the client and how to support them utilising best practice.

To be effective in this position you will present with:
  • Social Work Registration with Practicing Certificate
  • Membership of Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers
  • A minimum of two/three years social work practice in Mental Health
  • Sound understanding and working knowledge of social work models
  • Flexible, safe and creative approaches in supporting vulnerable people
  • Sound judgement
  • Excellent communication skills, able to contribute fully to Multi- Disciplinary practice
  • Passion for making a difference

Help us lead the world in Prisoner Wellbeing.  For further information please refer to the job description.

Please note: this is a rostered position across 7 days a week with the hours being between 8am – 5pm, this including weekends. To be successful in this position you will need a full clean driver's license.

The Department of Corrections embraces diversity and is committed to an inclusive workplace. We recognise and celebrate the uniqueness of individuals and celebrate the collective talent of all employees.
