Job Description

We are looking for highly skilled counsellors to help build women's strength and resilience while in prison through addressing their trauma histories.

Evidence indicates that three quarters of women in prison have been victimised through family violence, rape and other sexual assault. Many have long and intergenerational histories of poverty, discrimination, grief and violence. These traumatic experiences can leave women with varied and on-going effects, which can be compounded in prison and impact on their access or readiness to engage in rehabilitative programmes, and wider prison life.

We are seeking to appoint counsellors in each of our three women's prisons across the country to work with women struggling with histories and current circumstances of trauma.

To be successful in applying for this position you will:
  • have relevant counselling qualifications
  • have experience working with women who have suffered from trauma
  • enjoy working with women
  • have experience working effectively across cultures, especially with Maori women and
  • have an ability to build rapport in sometimes difficult situations.

As a new and important permanent part of the team working to support the women, you will assess their trauma needs, and engage them in treatment.

You will bring your skills and experience to help other staff in the prison engage more effectively with women suffering from the on-going effects of trauma, and take innovative approaches to improve women's wellbeing so they can create better futures for themselves, their children and wider whanau/families.

The Department of Corrections embraces diversity and is committed to an inclusive workplace. We recognise and celebrate the uniqueness of individuals and celebrate the collective talent of all employees.
