Job Description

  • Drive effective engagement on complex, high profile issues facing New Zealand
  • Engage throughout the policy process to develop the strategic narrative
  • Newly created influential role in our Policy & Trade branch

About MPI

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is responsible for ‘Growing and Protecting New Zealand'. It's no mean feat and we have a team of hard working and passionate people in a variety of roles both on the ground and in the office supporting us to make this happen.

About the team

Our Policy and Trade branch provides strategic thinking, policy advice and analysis, negotiates market access arrangements and oversees international government-to-government relationships to maximise export opportunities across New Zealand's primary sector.  We are a talented and motivated team who focus on sustainable economic growth, resource management, protecting New Zealand from biological risk and engaging on other big issues of interest to New Zealand's primary sector.

About the role

We have a unique opportunity for a thought leader to design and lead our strategic narrative and engagement strategies across a number of high profile policy areas that shape the primary industries and New Zealand.

This role will promote innovation and behaviour change in the way MPI develops policy to resonate with stakeholders and ultimately drive change. This role will be working directly to the Deputy Director General (DDG) Policy and Trade across the Policy and Trade Branch.

To be successful in this role, you will have;

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Evidence of excellent stakeholder management skills
  • A drive for innovation and excellence
  • A highly tuned risk radar
  • Experience establishing trust and building credibility quickly
  • An ability to communicate complex issues simply and tailor made to the audience
  • A background in policy, communications, engagement or journalism
  • A passion for primary industries

Working as part of our high performing Policy and Trade Leadership Team you will support our policy group to communicate complex issues, to help inform, engage and influence our key stakeholders. You'll work end to end on big policy issues alongside analysts and Directors to create a strategic narrative and mentor those around you on innovative participatory policy design. As a trusted Adviser to the DDG you will seize opportunities to build connections across the Branch and wider organisation, and provide strategic advice to the top table.
