Job Description

This is a fixed term role for six months


The Rakiura/Stewart Island Office is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic person to help supervise and support the biodiversity field team working across the Rakiura National Park and other Public Conservation Land to deliver our Natural Heritage goals.


This is a temporary 6-month position from November 2018 to May 2019 based in the Rakiura District Office situated in Oban, Halfmoon Bay. The role is a temporary position due to a pilot team structure trial underway and set to be completed by 29 April 2019, if a decision is made to implement the pilot this position may be made permanent.


This position is ideal for those who enjoy leading operational planning, logistics and managing delivery of biodiversity projects by field teams and/or third-party contractors. You will be working closely with the Senior Ranger, Biodiversity and Supervisor, Recreation & Historic as part of the dedicated Rakiura Operations Team delivering quality conservation in a unique and beautiful landscape.


Your role will contribute to preserving our natural heritage including ecosystems with significant conservation value and threatened animal populations.


Your role will be responsible for a range of duties including:

• Supervising a team of permanent and season staff working on local biodiversity projects
• Leading or assisting in staff recruitment
• Working alongside field staff to monitor work and coach staff to build capability
• Help set performance expectations and set development plans/training pathways to help staff achieve their professional goals
• Work closely with the Senior Ranger, Biodiversity to prioritise work tasks from annual plans for weekly and monthly work schedules
• Administrative duties to support the biodiversity field team including time recording, training records and expenditure management

The ideal applicant will have:

• A keen interest and experience in biodiversity conservation
• Excellent relationship building and conflict resolution skills
• The ability to provide leadership and support to a field-based team of up to 12 staff
• Experience in pest animal and pest plant control methods
• Good computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office.
• Enthusiasm for both office and field-based work
• A good level of fitness and the ability to be based in remote field locations for up to 10 days at a time.
