Job Description

Design quality and engaging heritage and nature based visitor experiences and products for our growing numbers of conservation visitors.

 

This role can be performed from one of the following locations: Hamilton, Nelson or Invercargill

 

At DOC, we are undergoing a refresh of the heritage and visitors strategy. A growing population, growing tourism industry, and increasing interest in getting into the outdoors means greater use of public lands and waters. Visitors are more diverse and interested in a wider range of experiences. Managing a million new visitors well demands new approaches and techniques, to protect conservation values and to ensure that visitors have great experience. To this end, a new unit is being established; one dedicated to ensuring DOC manages our major visitor regions well over the long term.

 

This role reports to the Director Heritage and Visitors, and has the following key responsibilities: 

  • Oversee the concept design of experiences for visitors, to underpin the redevelopment of iconic scenic attractions
  • Provide expert advice on visitor experience design approaches
  • Lead the development of business cases for experience initiatives
  • Champion story telling as a key aspect of conservation experiences
  • Ensure that desired safety outcomes are designed into the visitor experience
  • Lead a team of 6 direct reports including experience designers, a business analyst and a senior storytelling advisor

 

Your background will demonstrate:

  • Expertise in user-based design/experience design methodologies, and translating these into successful programmes.  
  • Experience in the wider tourism, natural resources or heritage sector.
  • Experience in a senior position which requires team leadership, business case development, strategic thinking and the ability to influence at the most senior levels.
  • Confidence in cross-functional approaches to working, with a proven ability to at once collaborate and deliver.
  • An understanding of Te Ao Māori values and knowledge, and experience partnering with iwi on complex issues.
  • A track record of innovation and turning strategy into meaningful execution.

 

The role is fulltime and your staff are spread across the country, so travel will be required.
