Job Description
EPA is the government agency responsible for regulating activities that affect New Zealand's environment. New Zealand has some unique environments, a unique culture, and a special relationship with tangata whenua (indigenous people). In doing our work we carefully balance social, economic, safety, and environmental factors to protect the way of life New Zealanders want now, and in the future. Our work must be done in a way that: contributes to the efficient, effective and transparent management of New Zealand's environment and natural and physical resources enables New Zealand to meet its international obligations. We have particular responsibilities under the environmental Acts we manage. Our role includes: Administering nationally significant proposals Managing chemicals in New Zealand Regulating activities in the Exclusive Economic Zone Administering the NZ Emissions Trading Scheme Making decisions about New Organisms Public awareness, and; Science leadership Hazardous Substances Advisors (Applications team) We are looking for an advisor to join our Hazardous Substances Applications team. In this team we assess and evaluate information, provided by applicants, to provide well-reasoned and expert guidance to decision makers as a part of a statutory process. It s a great time to join us and help make a difference in shaping the future of chemical management in New Zealand as we embark on a number of exciting and future focused initiatives, including a chemical modernisation programme. What we re looking for We d like to hear from people who have skills in toxicology or ecotoxicology, and more generally in chemical and biological sciences, scientific risk assessment / management. Experience working in a fast moving busy regulatory environment would be advantageous. Specific deliverables will be to process, assess, and review applications to import and manufacture, contain, determine and reassess hazardous substances under the HSNO Act. The nature of the work is varied and you will be provided with interesting and challenging opportunities to enhance your career as a regulator. We are forming a great team of people who are passionate about regulatory science and being part of a multidisciplinary team, wonderful to work with, and have a sense of fun. We are focused on being a proactive regulator and doing good for NZ, while delivering on our customer experience. Knowledge and experience required The successful applicant will have: * A relevant qualification, with experience in chemical and biological sciences, scientific risk and/or benefit analysis, scientific risk management, toxicology or ecotoxicology * Experience or demonstrated understanding of being a regulatory scientist * Ability to analyse complex or technical material and communicate it simply * Sound judgment, common sense and a pragmatic approach * Excellent written and oral communication skills * Experience in establishing and maintaining good relationships, internally and externally * To be self-motivated, driven to deliver, able to manage multiple tasks and have strong attention to detail * Capability to familiarise yourself with legislation and regulations, such as the HSNO Act, Health and Safety at Work Act and the ACVM Act * Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and partner with others to achieve collective deadlines and objectives * Appreciation of customer service being key to our role as a proactive regulator Experience and understanding of working with hazardous substances and our classification system under the HSNO regime would be considered advantageous, as would experience in regulatory science.
