Job Description

Protect New Zealand's security using your Data Engineering, Software Development, System Administration or Automation skills.

Our Technical Analysts use their skills and education to work on complex and interesting work that provides professional and personal satisfaction while also making a real contribution to the security and wellbeing of New Zealand.

As a Technical Analyst within our Intelligence Directorate, you will be responsible for using your software development or systems administration skills to enable the production of intelligence and to inform collection activities. We have a range of problems we need staff to work against, including problems that require staff with skills in data engineering, software development, system administration, and automation.

Our candidates are not expected to be experts across all these fields, but having skill and experience in a couple of these areas would be beneficial. You should also demonstrate experience in technologies appropriate to your background, typically some combination of Python, Puppet, Docker, Kafka, Spark or similar, for example.

Teamwork is key so you will enjoy working in a collaborative environment, engaging and sharing knowledge with a wide range of smart people.

The successful applicant will require:

  • A relevant degree with a quantitative or technical focus, such as Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Information Systems, etc.
  • Experience with Linux administration.
  • Software development in Python or JavaScript.

An excellent applicant would have some of the following:

  • Ability to design and develop tools.
  • Automation and DevOps style skills. Experience with the use of Docker, Kubernetes, or similar.
  • Understanding of network design and implementation.
  • Familiarity with data management and data streaming tools like Kafka, Logstash or similar.
  • Experience securing servers.
  • Familiarity with NoSQL Databases.
  • Automation expertise (Puppet, Ansible or similar).
  • Able to contribute to decisions on technology used.

Your professional development is important to us and we will dedicate significant investment to define your career path within the team and organisation.

Whether you are early in your career, or an industry expert, we have a position for you and these positions sit across 3 levels (depending on experience):

  • Level 1 – $58,500 – $87,750
  • Level 2 – $68,316 – $102,474
  • Level 3 - $77,711 – $116,567

As well as interesting work we offer a range of benefits including professional development, superannuation contribution, health insurance and on-site childcare and fitness facilities.

The GCSB believes that to succeed against increasingly complex and global threats, it must develop a dynamic, agile workforce that reflects diversity in its widest context. We encourage all parts of the community to consider a career with us.
