Youth Coach x5 – Supervised Group Home, Permanent, Full Time, Lower Hutt, Wellington

  • Make a difference in the lives of our young people.
  • Join a supportive team who are passionate about their work.
  • Work in a job where no two days are the same.

About us:

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is dedicated to supporting any child in New Zealand whose wellbeing is at significant risk of harm now, or in the future. We also work with young people who may have offended, or are likely to offend.

Our belief is that in the right environment, with the right people surrounding and nurturing them, any child can, and should flourish. We are a passionate group who are dedicated to improving outcomes for children and young people in our care and to support them to realise their potential.  We are dedicated to unlocking potential in our young people, who are always seeking new opportunities, inspiring others, and making connections, and building relationships built on trust and respect.

Our supervised group home, Leighton Avenue is based in Lower Hutt. This home is a place of safety where young people aged between 8 – 17 years have the opportunity to address unsafe behaviours and develop life skills. The purpose is to support young people in making good life choices, strengthening family/whānau relationships and safe reintegration back into the community.

We are now looking for 5 Youth Coaches who enjoy working with young people, supporting them to get their lives back on track and will be a positive role model for them. If you are passionate about making a difference in the lives of at-risk young people, join our supportive team who are fully committed to achieving positive outcomes for young people, whānau and the community.

As a Youth Coach you will:

  • Provide mentoring, support and care for rangatahi.
  • Support the young person to attend education and take part in the community.
  • Role model life skills to help them cook healthy meals and develop practical life skills.
  • Design and facilitate individual and small group programmes and activities to meet the diverse needs of young people in the home.
  • Support integration back into the community.

This is a unique opportunity to positively influence the lives of young people in your community. These permanent roles operate on a roster which involves weekend and evening work. Shift hours are (6.15am-2.45pm) or evening (2.15pm-10.45pm).

Applicants need to demonstrate:

  • Empathy and experience working with children.
  • An understanding of interventions and treatment approaches to effect positive behavioural change.
  • An ability to deliver structured programmes.
  • An interest in sports and fitness, tikanga Māori or music/arts.
  • A full, clean New Zealand drivers' licence.

Experience in social services, including working with at-risk children or youth, and/or a qualification in youth work is preferred, but not essential. You may have experience in working with young people as an employee or volunteer, or have relevant life skills. A full orientation programme will be offered to successful applicants.

If you want to be part of a team that is committed to working with young people to help them realise their absolute potential, then we would love to hear from you.
