Job Description

Computer / Network Technician (Cryptologic Technician)

  • Permanent - Based in Blenheim (Waihopai)

Are you enthusiastic about working with technology, and want to take that energy into a unique and exciting environment?  Do you feel like you could be doing more with your skills? Do you want the opportunity to expand those IT skills into other areas? Are you interested in being part of an organisation that is committed to the security and well-being of New Zealand?

If the answer to these questions is yes, you need to seriously consider working for us at our Marlborough facility. Yes, Marlborough. Those of you struggling to buy a house in one of New Zealand's larger cities should check out the average house prices in Blenheim (you'll have time while you're stuck in traffic). While you're there take a look at the sunshine hours. You'll be looking at one of New Zealand's sunniest towns. It's no coincidence that we're the centre of New Zealand's wine industry.

What you'll bring to the position:

  • Enthusiasm for solving complex IT problems with an emphasis on collection and analysis of data to derive facts and project trends.
  • A strong technical background with good customer service and communications skills.
  • A passion for building, supporting and managing complex computer based systems.
  • Relevant work experience with IT based systems and networking and hopefully some formal training like a tertiary qualification.
  • Familiarity with secure communications systems and protocols.
  • The ability to learn and in turn share knowledge with others.
  • Enjoyment working in a team environment, but the ability to work unsupervised.

We refer to a person with this expertise as a Cryptologic Technician. Don't let the word ‘Cryptologic' spook you (see what we did there). It's not code breaking but you can be expected to do some unique things with your computing / networking / problem solving skills.

What you get from us:

  • Unique and extremely interesting work that you don't get to do anywhere else.
  • Career and training opportunities
  • Close knit, family friendly culture and community
  • Competitive salary appropriate to qualifications and experience.
  • Private medical insurance and vision care benefits.
  • You'll never have to take your work home with you, but the hours can be flexible.

These are some of the skills that the successful applicant will have (not all of them, but hey, we can dream right?):

  • Knowledge of network-based intrusion detection systems and the ability to identify & research vulnerabilities,
  • Linux and Windows system administration familiarity with a focus on networks and problem resolution.
  • Production of formal and informal reports, briefings, and perspectives.
  • Scripting and programming.
  • Work with complex multi-server processing systems (design, deploy, support, monitor).
  • Installation and maintenance of a wide range of technical equipment
  • Experience installing a range of cabling types including coaxial, Cat5/6 and fibre.
  • Robust understanding of archiving and backup requirements.
  • Interoperability (even if you have to DIY from time to time).

Do the skills above sound varied? They are. We will be expecting you to learn a whole lot more. It's more important that you bring the right attitude and a desire to improve your skill set in a unique environment.

You will join a technology centric team who collectively do amazing things with computing and electronic technology, but you should also be comfortable solving complex problems on your own. You'll know that when the Engineers dream up an idea, you'll be the one who will make it work and that configuration management isn't aspirational.

We're a little bit different. The work is always challenging and it's important for the security of New Zealand.

Salary range: $68,316 - $102,474 depending on experience
