Job Description

This is a great opportunity to join a diverse and strong engineering team focused on providing scientific advice and technology support to their customers namely the Army, Navy and Air Force.  This civilian position sits with the Defence Technology Agency (DTA) within the Autonomy section of the Electronic Warfare group.

Autonomy is a future focused technology and this is an exceptional opportunity to join a team who are passionate about the work they do and the role they play in contributing to New Zealand and the NZDF.

Typically within this role you will be working on developing algorithms and embedded systems which will play a key role in trials and evaluations of systems for NZDF. We are seeking a person with strong technical skills in electronics, communication protocols and radio frequency communications to provide solutions to high tech problems such as drone countermeasures and understanding the vulnerability of autonomous systems.

You will also have a demonstrable and in-depth understanding of electronic design, software development, Global Positioning Systems, (GPS) and computer communication protocols. Experience in the use of tools such as Matlab, LabVIEW, Gnu-radio and FPGA tools for the development of Software Defined Radios (SDRs) is also desirable.

Strong analytical and problem solving skills will be needed for processing large complex data sets and to develop working solutions from data acquisition.

Practical skills such as soldering, electronic assembly and integration are also important in this role.

This role would ideally suit a qualified engineer with significant post graduate experience in a relevant field of science and engineering. However we are also able to consider an individual who is at the start of their post graduate experience (in this instance total remuneration would be at a lower grade and commensurate with skills and experience).

Being self-motivated and proactive you will relish the opportunity to find solutions to technical problems. You are a confident communicator and able to drive test programs within the NZDF and externally while establishing key relationships and networks not only within DTA but across the wider organisation.

A full driver's licence is essential as is the ability to travel domestically and internationally when needed.

The NZDF offers a range of benefits to its employees including five weeks annual leave, life insurance, income protection insurance and much more.   Check out the great benefits for you and your family when you join NZDF!

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.

If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
