This role is part of the Technical Services team. Be part of a team that advises the NZTA on specific road subjects such as geotechnical, pavements, structures, surfacings, quality assurance and construction. The team helps support the implementation of NZTA projects. It also manages, creates, and updates standards and specifications for the technical aspects of projects and provides training on these technical subjects. Additionally team members are responsible for progressing research on these technical aspects to ensure future better outcomes for all roads in NZ.

The role

The purpose of this role is to provide technical expertise, guidance and advice for the design of new pavements and road maintenance activities across the national transport system and do research into new pavement technologies. You will work collaboratively with designers, system managers and industry representatives to enable the delivery of fit for purpose customer outcomes and to support the development of appropriate standards and guidelines.

What you will bring

To be successful in this role, you will bring:


Knowledge and Experience

  • At least 7 years of experience in pavement design for capital and road maintenance activities
  • In-depth pavement expertise that will be applicable to New Zealand transport systems and standards
  • Extensive knowledge of pavement and surfacing treatments, design and construction processes
  • Ability to initiate and manage research projects related to pavements
  • Recognised experience in influencing and building credibility across a range of stakeholders to achieve best asset management outcomes



  • Tertiary qualifications at preferably post graduate level in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience
  • Must be able to travel frequently across New Zealand
