Job Description

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is a Crown Entity established on 1 July 2017 under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 2017. The role of our new organisation is to reduce unwanted fires, respond to structural and vegetation fires and other emergencies including motor vehicle crashes, medical emergencies, hazardous substance related incidents, natural disasters and support increased community resilience.

Our new, unified organisation provides a fire and emergency service that delivers for communities, and the firefighters who serve them, now and in the future.

We currently have a fixed-term opportunity for a Financial Accountant, operating expenditure to join our busy team until December 2019. Reporting to the Team Leader Financial Accounting, you will be responsible for overseeing all tax matters (GST, FBT, PAYE and WHT) for both Fire and Emergency and United Fire Brigade Association (UFBA), monthly and annual financial reporting to UFBA stakeholders, and managing Fire and Emergency's relationship with the UFBA. This role also includes month end and year end processing and other reporting requirements, i.e. CFIS and Select Committee questions. You will also play a key role identifying and implementing process improvements within the financial accounting team.

The ideal applicant:

  • A Chartered Accountant (CA) or hold an equivalent qualification essential with a track record of delivering high quality financial reporting. Preferably with three to five years post qualification experience
  • Experience with preparing and filing GST (NZ and Australia), FBT, PAYE and Withholding tax returns
  • Experience with monthly financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis
  • Exceptional time management skills, eye for detail and the ability to think outside the box
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders at all levels
  • Experience managing external statutory reporting and external audit processes
  • Previous CFIS reporting experience would be desirable but not essential
