The Department of Corrections runs New Zealand's correction system.  It has over 9,000 staff handling the management of 10,500 prisoners and more than 30,000 community-based offenders. Health, safety and well-being are integral parts of all that we do and we have a clear vision to ensure that everyone goes home safe, every single day.

The Senior Health and Safety Adviser (Strategy and Policy) leads the Department's development of policy, processes and resources that guide engagement, work practices and event reviews; and helps to shape health, safety and wellbeing improvement initiatives.

This role has a huge scope to guide strategic change in the organisation. Corrections have a large focus on ensuring the Health and safety of all of the 8,000 + staff and 10,000 + residents.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Future-focused to develop strategic goals and over-arching priorities
  • A proven ability to define problems and to apply creativity, logic and frameworks to the development of policy options
  • Demonstrated, successful experience in policy together with an understanding of the trade-offs, risks, and competing priorities that are common to policymaking
  • A broad knowledge of the key issues and emerging trends in the occupational health, safety and wellbeing environments is essential
  • The ability to develop policy advice that advances the Department's strategic goals and priorities
  • Knowledge of evidence-based policy development
  • Experience developing health and safety management systems is desirable
  • Maintain internal and external relationships aimed at gathering information to be conveyed to the National Manager Safety Strategy and Planning, for transparency and efficiency
  • A proven ability to plan, prioritise and organise your workload to ensure that deadlines are met and work is delivered to an agreed standard
  • A strong awareness of the implications of the Treaty of Waitangi for policy development and the ability to develop policy advice which is culturally responsive, particularly to Maori
