Research & Development Engineer (Level 1 – 3) – Wellington

  • Research, design and develop both software and hardware to support the Intelligence mission

We are seeking talented programmers and researchers to join a software research and development team. As part of this specialised team you will be responsible for delivering exciting and often unique projects which you will find challenging and intellectually rewarding.

Enthusiasm and tenacity will be necessary as you research, design, implement, and maintain our software and Intelligence systems.

You should have proven programming expertise, and the potential to work in C / C++ on various operating systems, networking or embedded platforms. In this diverse role, you will have opportunities to work on projects and become an expert in one or more of the following areas:

  • Kernel or driver development for Windows and/or Linux
  • Development for the Win32/POSIX API, and/or networking APIs
  • Planning and conducting independent research
  • Assembler or embedded systems programming
  • Reverse engineering
  • Analysis and design of network protocols
  • Linux and/or Windows systems administration & security
  • Automating the testing and deployment of systems and products


Whether you are a recent graduate, are about to finish a postgraduate research project, or developed in industry to an expert level, we have multiple positions that will fit your experience, and a defined path to progress as your career grows within the team and the GCSB.

The Salary Ranges for the three levels are:

Level 1                   $68,316 - $102,474

Level 2                   $77,711 - $116,567

Level 3                   $90,366 - $135,548

To be eligible for employment within the NZIC you must have been a NZ citizen for at least 10 years. Alternatively you must hold NZ Permanent Residence or hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and have been a citizen of UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years.

You must be able to obtain and maintain a high level security clearance. Ordinarily to obtain this level of clearance candidates must have a 15 year checkable background in countries where meaningful and reliable checks can be undertaken. Where requisite checks are unable to be made, the candidate application may not be able to be progressed.
