The Ministry's purpose - he whenua mana kura mō te tangata - is to make New Zealand the most liveable place in the world – for our kids, their children and grandchildren. This means we act as stewards for the environment, so that New Zealand and New Zealanders continue to prosper.

Background

You would initially start work in Mana Honohono - the Investments and Partnerships Directorate.  They work across multiple domains with the primary focus directed to land and freshwater.   Within this directorate, the Hono Tātaki – Resource Efficiency and Innovation team is charged with accelerating a transition to a circular economy, increasing resource efficiency and achieving waste minimisation.   Hono Tahua – Communities and Freshwater Investments runs several funds and engages with communities and iwi.

Our stakeholders and partners are diverse and include iwi, local government, the commercial sector and non-governmental organisations. Achieving tangible results by partnering with others is critical to the success of this role.

Role purpose

You will initially be placed into Mana Honohono.  Our primary legislative drivers are the Waste Minimisation Act, the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act, the Resource Management Act, the Litter Act and the Local Government Act. Our operational policy is driven from primary legislation, National Environmental Standards and government direction (e.g. the New Zealand Waste Strategy). As an Investment Manager Analyst, you be an important part of the investment management of the Waste Minimisation Fund.  You will be located in Hono Tātaki – Resource Efficiency & Innovation, which has a focus on circular economy initiatives to design waste out of the system.  Current investments per annum are around $60M, with an additional $13M per funding round every year.  We are moving to a targeted investment approach, and you will be instrumental in driving and implementing our new approach.  The Successful Candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Investment management experience
  • Experience in evaluation is  an advantage
  • an  understanding of te reo Māori
  • a high level of communication  and interpersonal skill
  • a desire to influence and build relationships

You will also have experience partnering with our key stakeholders from the commercial sector, iwi groups, local government and the community sector.

We value innovation, policy entrepreneurship and thought leadership, and our clear purpose and behaviours (our Edge) underpin all that we do.

We support flexible approaches to work to ensure that we have the best person for the role.  The Ministry for the Environment operates a flexible environment to enable staff to work on various projects.
