Job Description

The New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) is responsible for protecting New Zealand against threats to the border, facilitating the legitimate movement of people and goods and collecting customs and excise revenue on behalf of the Crown.

 

Due to a recent internal promotion, we have a vacancy for a Manager Operations, Processes and Systems. The position sits within the Process Optimisation work area (and reports to the Manager Process Optimisation), but alongside the other two Manager Operations Process and Systems positions within Border Operations has responsibility for and will be leading work across the Border Operations group.

 

This includes being a member of the Border Operations Leadership Team, and will involve leading work/projects where you are accountable through to the relevant work areas.

 

The position can be based in and operate from Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch, and can accommodate a variety of flexible working arrangements.

 

Your key responsibilities will include managing a range of projects, and to apply both project management discipline and operational knowledge/expertise to ensure the effective delivery of the work, building and maintaining effective relationships across Border Operations and Operations and Customs, as well as with the border and key partner agencies and with oversea stakeholders.

 

You will provide a point of contact and act as a subject matter expert for the groups outside operations and support the operational effectiveness and identify opportunities to improve service delivery across Border Operations.

 

To be successful you will need to be able to demonstrate broad operational knowledge, have experience in managing projects, ideally across medium to large projects and including some level of project management training (although not a requirement, as project management training will be provided) a self-driven and motivated attitude and have a desire to and experience operating and achieving results at a system and strategic level.

 

Joining Customs

To join Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident*.  Due to the nature of Customs' work all candidates must have a clear Police record.  Security clearances are mandatory and are conducted by Customs before job offers are made; due to the nature of this work, the successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance at Top Secret level.  Successful applicants are also required to pass a drug test and medical assessment, they must also hold a full driver licence.

(*) You need to have continuously resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years, or in one or more of the following countries: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom or United States.  You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.
