At Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children we work with some of the most at risk children and young people in the country, and we're passionate about it.


We're seeking to hire an experienced Chef to join our Support Services team at our Epuni Residence in Lower Hutt. The residence operates on a 24 hours, 7 days a week basis therefore daytime, evening and weekend shifts may be required. This role is for 32 hours per fortnight.


In this busy and varied role, you will assist the team of cooks in planning menus and preparing meals for our exceptional children and young people in care. Your great organisational skills will see you manage delivery arrangements, order food stores, assist in the staff roster, prepare for special events and prepare quality meals on time.


Oranga Tamariki residences are strongly focused on achieving positive change through education, skill development, vocational and employment programmes with the goal of positive integration back into the community. As one of our talented residential chefs, you will build strong working relationships with residential staff, social workers, young people in care as well as external contractors.


The successful applicant will have:

  • Proven experience working as a Chef.
  • A level of competence in using a computer.
  • Strong relationship building skills and experience dealing with young people.
  • Ability to work to a schedule and meet deadlines.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective organisation, planning and time management skills.
  • Ability to work unsupervised at times.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team, use your initiative and a sense of humour.
  • A clean, current, full driver's licence.


On top of this, you'll have strong organisational skills and good attention to detail to work to tight deadlines. You'll like dealing with people, take pride in customer service and positively manage internal and external business relationships with ease.
