The team


Be part of a team whose vision is that everyone (person, whānau, family, community and agency) knows their role in responding to, and preventing family violence and sexual violence, and feels competent and resourced to act.


Established in September 2018, the JVBU is leading the way in culture change within government and the wider sector, by adopting a new way of working that brings chief executives from 10 agencies together in a joint venture, to deliver an integrated, whole-of-government approach to reducing family violence and sexual violence. The JVBU has created a single point of accountability and leadership, that will focus on a strategic overview of prevention, early intervention, crisis response and support for long-term recovery.

The role


The JVBU is advertising for a Principal Advisor to co-lead the development and implementation of a national strategy to eliminate violence within whānau, family violence and sexual violence.


The Principal Advisor will lead engagement with a wide range of stakeholders and manage a design process that is successful in engaging people from diverse communities in the development of government policy. This role will provide intellectual leadership and specialist advice across the JVBU work programme based on mātauranga Māori, to ensure that the needs and aspirations of whānau Māori are reflected.


Another key aspect of this role is to support the establishment of Te Rōpū, a Māori Crown entity that the JVBU will partner with to deliver results in the reduction of violence within whānau, family violence and sexual violence.


This role would suit a talented thought leader with proven experience in delivering strategic and operational policy advice on complex social issues. Experience in facilitating relationships with diverse stakeholders to deliver shared outcomes through design and co-development would be of benefit, so too subject knowledge of violence within whānau, family violence and sexual violence.

Responsibilities

The Principal Advisor will:

  • Co-lead the development of the national strategy to eliminate family violence and sexual violence and violence within whānau
  • Provide specialist advice on approaches to violence prevention, whānau violence, domestic violence, sexual violence response and whānau wellbeing informed by Te Ao Māori practice and research
  • Support the members of the interim Te Rōpū during the national strategy design process, to ensure that their voices are reflected throughout
  • Build and strengthen partnerships with Māori-led organisations, whānau, hapu and iwi, across whānau violence, sexual violence and family violence sectors


Skills and experience

The Principal Advisor will have a range of skills and expertise including:

  • Policy development and advice to a Principal Advisor level
  • Leadership – of people and processes
  • A good foundation in te Reo Māori and mātauranga Māori
  • Knowledge of the te Tiriti O Waitangi and how it applies to addressing violence within whānau   
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of working with Māori in the family violence and mahi tūkino sector (outside government)
  • Experience in working with kaupapa Māori policy and practice models in addressing sexual violence, family violence and violence within whānau
  • Experience in leading government agency engagements with practitioners, experts and communities including Māori communities
  • Experience working in/with government
     
  • Relationship management and engagement with diverse communities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication capabilities
  • Active and respectful participation in team work
  • Personal commitment to preventing violence and building whānau wellbeing and Māori development.

Salary range:  $106,686- $144,340
