The New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) is responsible for protecting New Zealand against threats to the border, facilitating the legitimate movement of people and goods and collecting customs and excise revenue on behalf of the Crown.

In response to the Government's commitment to addressing the harms caused by illicit drugs in New Zealand, NZ Customs have established a number of key new positions to increase capability and disrupt the importation of illicit drugs into the country.

The Customs Maritime Unit (CMU) is seeking motivated individuals to join their flexible, highly trained and high performing team in Auckland. 

Successful applicants are required to work well within a small team in a variety of sea, land and air environments. It is essential the incumbent can demonstrate the ability to self-manage, to work/live for extended periods in close proximity to other team members and contribute to the high performance of the team.

The key activity for the Customs Maritime Unit is to respond to any risk to the New Zealand maritime border. This involves; patrol; surveillance; and searching, detecting offences and preparing prosecution files. The Customs Maritime Unit provides coverage 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Ideal Person Profile:

  • The holder of, or the ability to attain the following maritime certificates, Inshore Launch Master, Skipper Restricted Limits or Skipper Coastal Offshore.
  • Have knowledge of the risks to the border, which New Zealand Customs is responsible for managing, together with an understanding of the relevant legislative and regulatory processes and a commitment to maintaining compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work to high professional and ethical standards consistent with Customs' values and those of the New Zealand Public Service.
  • Able to work flexible hours, to work up to 120 days away from home per year, and to work and travel at short notice and be on call.
  • Achieve and maintain a level of fitness and physical ability to enable you to undertake the full range of duties.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to a wide range of audiences.
  • Sound computer skills including word processing and the ability to make effective use of computer systems.
  • Hold a "Secret" security clearance or the ability to obtain one.Medical and Fitness Testing:  • Beep test to 5.1 standard and 10 press-ups Hours of Work: 
  • This position is a full-time position (2088 hours per annum) worked flexibly, within a rostered work pattern, or flexible hours, to enable coverage for 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
  • • 50-metre swim in overalls, tread water for 3 minutes.
  • On an annual basis, Customs Maritime Officers are required to pass a comprehensive medical assessment and pass a fitness test to the following standard;
  • Short listed candidates will be required to successfully pass a comprehensive medical, the CMU fitness test and the NZ Customs swim test. Only those candidates who pass these tests will proceed to panel interview.
