Job Description

  • Exciting data leadership opportunity across government and beyond
  • Two fixed term full time positions until June 2020
  • Wellington based

Are you an experienced senior advisor who is passionate about lifting data capability, who enjoys variety in a dynamic work environment, and who is outcome-focused? If so, this role could be for you.

Government holds a vast amount of data on behalf of New Zealanders. Stats NZ has been appointed as the lead agency for data, facilitating and enabling an inclusive, joined-up approach across government. Because government collects and uses data on behalf of New Zealanders, it has a duty to steward data as a valuable asset to help drive innovation and contribute to economic, social, and environmental progress.

We are looking for experienced senior advisors to lead exciting initiatives in our Data Leadership and Capability team designed to build government s capability in data and analytics, and that of New Zealand s data system as a whole.

We want to create a front door or waharoa for our system capability services, and you will be an important contributor to our Data Capability Hub and the teams (and organisations) wanting our services and support.

The purpose of the role

In this role, you will lead the development and implementation of innovative solutions, frameworks, guidance and materials to lift the data system s capability. You will have great connections across data communities, delivering positive outcomes by shaping and sharing solutions, and bringing an outside-in perspective.

More specifically, your role is to:

  • Lead the development and publication of content that supports self-service on data.govt.nz, to fulfil our goals for the Open Data Programme on behalf of the government
  • Implement innovative and effective solutions that are sought out and used to lift the capability of the data system, via the Open Data Programme
  • Measure and monitor outcomes and the direct/indirect impacts being delivered via the Open Data Programme
  • Deliver the work  in collaboration with, and contributing to, the wider team.
,

Person specifications

To be successful in this role, you will have proven experience:

  • Working as a senior advisor, preferably having worked in a content development or consulting environment
  • Delivering impactful outcomes to a wide range of stakeholders
  • Designing and working with frameworks, guidance and tools in an innovative way
  • Demonstrating and understanding of capability and skills development, particularly related to data and analytical skills
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships internally and externally, including working in partnership with agencies and other organisations, including businesses
  • Identifying and realising new opportunities, discovering talent, and brokering access to, and sharing, information

  You will also have:

  • Strong links to the open data community
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; strong intellectual, analytical and conceptual skills, and the ability to deal with complex matters
  • A can-do attitude and solution-driven approach to finding innovative solutions
  • An outcome-focused approach to the delivery of a work programme
  • An interest in (or  experience in) analytics (data and statistics)

Who we are

At Stats NZ Tatauranga Aotearoa our vision is to unleash the power of data to change lives.  As New Zealand s official data and statistics agency, we are tasked with leading the way for New Zealand s data future, enabling data-led innovation across society, the economy, and the environment.
