Job Description

Permanent, full-time flexible (32 to 38 hours per week)

About the Ministry for Women

The Ministry for Women, Te Minitatanga mō ngā Wāhine, is improving outcomes for New Zealand women. We are the Government's principal advisor on achieving better results for New Zealand women. Our vision is that Aotearoa New Zealand is a great place to be a woman or girl, wāhine Māori succeed as Māori, and gender is not a barrier to wellbeing.

About the opportunity

Reporting to the Director, Corporate Services, this position is part of a small Corporate Services team providing a range of finance, HR and support services to the Ministry. This is an important senior role in our team and has responsibility for leading the Ministry's operational and strategic HR. A key focus for the Ministry is to improve our overall awareness and understanding of tikanga and how we can support outcomes of wāhine Māori.

The focus of the position is across the whole organisation, overseeing and contributing to the delivery of operational HR services, and leading the Ministry's strategic HR advice to the Chief Executive (CE) and Leadership Team (LT). You will oversee the work of the Advisor, Corporate Services in providing a quality HR service to Managers.

You will have excellent relationship management skills and lead the Ministry's relationship with key stakeholders at SSC, our payroll provider and Heads of HR in the public service. Internally, you will work closely with the Principal Advisor, Corporate Services and the Finance Manager to ensure Corporate Services deliver high quality services to the Ministry.

You will be comfortable working at both an operational and strategic level in the organisation, as well as coaching and mentoring junior team members.

What this role offers

We are a small agency and operate a 'one-Ministry' culture where everyone pitches in and contributes to the whole of our work programme. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a small ministry and work closely with the CE, LT and Minister's office, as well as work across our priority areas on a range of issues that impact New Zealand women.

Working flexibly

The Ministry is working towards being a flexible-by-default organisation. We have a range of flexible working arrangements in place with our staff including part time hours, compressed hours and remote working. We work together to put in place flexible arrangements that best suit each individual, their team and the organisation. We are open to considering a flexible arrangement for this role, with a minimum of 32 hours, so please let us know how that might best work for you as part of your application.

About you

We value diversity in our workforce.

We select on capability, not gender and welcome expressions of interest from a wide range of candidates who have/demonstrate:

  • a tertiary qualification or relevant experience
  • ideally eight or more years of experience in a generalist HR role with experience within the public sector being an advantage
  • demonstrated experience engaging and influencing senior leaders
  • demonstrated knowledge, understanding of relevant employment relations legislation
  • demonstrated experience in the implementation of human resources policies, procedures and organisational development initiatives
  • knowledge and experience leading and overseeing payroll
  • the ability to work to tight deadlines and under pressure
  • ability to build stakeholder relationships, internally and externally, and influence decision making.

A full job description is attached.

The salary range for this position is $99,300 to $148,900 with a midpoint of $124,100.
